Creation of Universe Explained

According to Jain beliefs, the universe was never created, nor will it ever cease to exist. Therefore, it is shaswat (infinite). It has no beginning or end, but time is cyclical with progressive and regressive spirituality phases.

Jains divide time into Utsarpinis (Progressive Time Cycle) and Avsarpinis (Regressive Time Cycle). An Utsarpini and an Avsarpini constitute one Time Cycle (Kalchakra). Every Utsarpini and Avsarpini is divided into six unequal periods known as Aras. During the Utsarpini half cycle, humanity develops from its worst to its best: ethics, progress, happiness, strength, health, and religion each start the cycle at their worst, before eventually completing the cycle at their best and starting the process again. During the Avsarpini half-cycle, these notions deteriorate from the best to the worst. Jains believe we are currently in the fifth Ara of the Avsarpini phase, with approximately 19,000 years until the next Ara. After this Ara we will enter the sixth phase. Which will be for approximately 21,000 years. After this Utsarpini phase will begin, continuing the infinite repetition of the Kalchakra.

Jains believe that at the upswing of each time cycle, people will lose religion again. All wishes will be granted by wish-granting trees (Kalpavrksa), and people will be born in sets of twins (Yugalika) with one boy and one girl who stay together all their lives: a symbol of an integrated human with male and female characteristics balanced.

Jain philosophy is based upon eternal, universal truths. During the first and last two Aras, these truths lapse among humanity and then reappear through the teachings of enlightened humans, those who have reached moksa or total knowledge (Kevala Jnana), during the third and fourth Aras. Traditionally, in our universe and in our time, Lord Rishabha (ऋषभ) is regarded as the first to realize the truth. Lord Vardhamana (Mahavira) was the last Tirthankara to attain enlightenment (599-527 BCE). He was preceded by twenty-three others, making a total of twenty-four Tirthankaras.

It is important to note that the above description stands true "in our universe and in our time" for Jains believe there have been infinite sets of 24 Tirthankaras, one for each half of the time cycle, and this will continue in the future. Hence, Jainism does not trace its origins to Rishabh Deva, the first, or finish with Mahavira, the twenty-fourth, Tirthankara.

According to Jainism, the Universe consists of infinite amount of Jiva (life force or souls), and the design resembles a man standing with his arms bent while resting his hands on his waist. The narrow waist part comprises various Kshetras, for vicharan (roaming) for humans, animals and plants. Currently we are in the Bharat Kshetra of Jambu Dweep (dweep means island).

The Deva Loka (Heavens) are at the symbolic 'chest' of Creation, where all Devas (demi gods) reside. Similarly beneath the 'waist' are the Narka Loka (Hell). There are seven Narka Lokas, each for a varying degree suffering a jiva has to go through to face the consequences of its paap karma (sins). From the first to the seventh Narka, the degree of suffering increases and light reaching it decreases (with no light in the seventh Narka).

The sidhha kshetra or moksha is situated at the symbolic forehead of the creation, where all the jivas having attained nirvana reside in a state of complete peace and eternal happiness. Outside the symbolic figure of this creation nothing but aloka or akaasha (sky) exists.

Bhagwan Mahaveer

This is a Very Interesting read about Jainism! (Extract: http://www.jainteerth.com/LordMahaveer.asp)
=========
According to Jainism, God is not born, but a man can attain Godhood by his own superb spiritual efforts. This fact is also right for Mahaveer. He born at the home of King Siddharth of Kundgram of Vaishali Ganatantra. His mother’s name was Trishala.

One day, during the fourth quarter of night Queen Trishala saw sixteen wonderful dreams and then saw that a white bullock entered her mouth. After seeing dreams she at once waked up, she was very happy but also felt in wonder thinking about the indication of dreams. After reciting the Panch Namaskar Mantra, she engaged in daily routine. After this she went to King Siddharth in his court and described about the dreams seen early morning. As king came to know about her dreams, he felt spiritual joy & happiness and told to his wife about the indication of each dream. He said, “O Rani Trishala! You are great, you are going to be the mother of last Teerthankar Bhagwan Mahaveer.” He ordered to celebrate the holy auspicious occasion with great enthusiasm and glory.

At the same time the lord of heaven, Indra also came to know about the conception of last Teerthankar at the home of King Siddharth & Queen Trishala. So he, with his Shachi Indrani and many Devs & Devies of heaven came to Kundgram.

Then ‘Garbha Kalyanaka ’ was celebrated. Indra & Devs praised King & Queen and presented so many valuable gifts to them. Then Indra after celebrations went to his place, but some Devies were left there to serve the Queen Trishala – the holy mother of last Teerthankar.

After completion of the period of carrying, on the day ‘Chaitra Shukla – 13’, Bhagwan Mahaveer was born, about 2600 years ago.

At the time of birth, huge & magnificent celebrations were organized called ‘Janma-Kalyanaka ’. During Janma-Kalyanaka, firstly new born Teerthankar child was taken to ‘Panduk-Shila’ (a platform) on ‘Sumeru Parvat’ (Mountain) for consecration.

Consecration takes place by 1008 Kalash (big round pots). Before consecration, Indra thought for a moment ‘whether consecration may not cause some problem to new born child!’ Bal (child) Teerthankar just knew the doubt of Indra by ‘Avadhigyan’ (spiritual power of knowledge) and pressed that place by thumb of his foot. The pressure was so high that Sumeru was vibrated. Then getting impressed greatly by the superb power of Teerthankar Indra praised him and named him ‘Veer’.

According to ‘Vardhaman Charitra’, when the consecration was in progress, water entered in the nose of Bal Teerthankar. So he sneezed at once. By the pressure of air Sumeru Parvat (Hill) was vibrated, Indra & many Devs fell down there.

This shows that Teerthankar Bhagwan, even in childhood has the infinite power & spiritual knowing capacity.

After consecration completed, Indra & Shachi clothed & decorated the child with the precious cloths & ornaments brought from heaven and returned back to Kundgram.

At Kundgram getting the Bal(child) Teerthankar in own hands King Siddharth & Mother Trishala were filled with great joy, enthusiasm & spiritual feelings.

Then a huge & magnificent Janma-Kalyanaka was celebrated by whole the kingdom, Indra, Shachi, many Devs & Devies with full devotion and pious heart. According to Jain Ethics, it is said that up to fifteen months, till the birth of Teerthankar, showers of jewels & precious stones took place, three times daily. So there was none suffering from poverty. Keeping in mind the increasing prosperity & cheer of kingdom, King Siddharth & Mother Trishala called their son by name – ‘Vardhaman’.

By time Vardhaman was growing gradually, there was no need of teacher, his intelligence and talent was also growing with age automatically.

Child Vardhaman was just like other children, but he was a genius, conversant with the knowledge of self, prudent, healthy & judicious. He was never afraid of any being what so ever. He possessed immeasurable courage.

Once upon a time, a god of heaven (Dev) came to see the courage of Vardhaman. He turned himself in a dangerous snake and appeared in the garden, where Vardhaman was playing with friends. Snake came out from his place near a tree and started hissing in a dangerous way. All the playmates, as they saw the scene run away here & there, to keep safe themselves. But Vardhaman, without fear saw the snake with calm and came forward to him. As Vardhaman was about to catch him, he turned in his original form – a Dev. Then Dev praised the Vardhaman for his courage & wisdom.

Vardhaman was growing steadily. His wiseful & spiritual talks were pleasing to his parents, playmates & public. One day an elephant became mad, breaking his chains & ropes came out from his place. The elephant started running dangerously on high way, as he came, public started running & crying save-save. As Vardhaman came to know this event, at once he arrived at the same road without any weapon. Vardhaman stood at the mid of road looking in the elephant’s direction. Vardhaman’s face was calm; his eyes were showering peace & love for elephant, such as giving him the message of nonviolence & peace. As the elephant saw Vardhaman standing peacefully without any fear, his anger & violence came down, he at once turned in an obedient & pet animal. Now he was not dangerous to any one. After this occasion, Vardhaman was called ‘Ativeer’.

One story is also popular regarding his name – ‘Sanmati’. One day two munies (Monks) named Sanjay & Vijay were passing through the sky. They were going for the pilgrimage of Sammed Shikhar – the immortal place of salvation. They have a minute question regarding the characteristics of soul. They were feeling unhappy seeing the absence any omniscient personality after salvation of 23rd Teerthankar Bhagwan Parshvanath, who may answer their question. Returning from Sammed Shikhar, while they were passing through the sky of Kundgram, they were happy looking the palace of King Siddharth, thinking about the next Teerthankar Vardhaman – Mahaveer.

At that time Vardhaman was sitting in a window with his mother talking each other. As two munies saw Vardhaman – the last Teerthankar, sitting in the window, they felt a spiritual change in their mind & soul and found that the question of their mind was solved automatically. Both the munies stuck there for a moment, dipped in wonder looking the miraculous beauty & greatness of would be Teerthankar. After getting resolved their question, both munies praised the Vardhaman and called him – ‘Sanmati’. He was called Sanmati by virtue of attaining complete & perfect knowledge too.

By time, Vardhaman grew as a young man, but his mind was never engaged in worldly affairs. He never took interest in the matters of Kingdom. He was always engaged in thinking about the falseness of worldly affairs / joys of senses. Young Vardhaman was busy in searching the truth of world, the nature of soul and to get the path of spiritual bliss (Nirvan or salvation). Vardhaman was well known that only worldly affection & aversion, unawareness about soul, interests in the subjects of senses are the main caused of cycle of birth & death. And self realization / perception will only lead towards the freedom from world.

This was the only reason that Vardhaman refused for marriage. His parents tried their level best to persuade him to marry but they failed utterly in their attempts.

In the age of thirty years, in the full bloom of youth, he renounced this world and became a monk, accepting asceticism. He performed formidable penances up to twelve long years.

During this long period, many Yakshas or heavenly gods came to earth to see / examine the asceticism, the deep penance or his ignorance for worldly affairs.

Once upon a time, Indra praised Muni Vardhaman’s deep penance and stated in his court, “this time absorption of Vardhaman in his soul, during meditation is wonderful, his asceticism is unique; he has totally given up the subjects of senses & far a head of passions/emotions. He is great.” After listening this, a Dev / Yaksha named Sthanu decided to examine Muni Vardhaman’s deep penance. He came to place of penance & saw that Vardhaman was deeply engrossed in self and violent animals too were sitting there peacefully. Then he started his work in dangerous way to disturb the concentration of Muni, he changed his body in the shape of dangerous animals e.g. lion, python etc, he threw stones, created fire and heavy rains. But all in vain, Dev was unable to disturb Muni even trying his best of skill. He knew that Indra was right.

Then the Dev turned himself in his original form and praised Muni Vardhaman by his deep & pure heart calling him ‘Ativeer’.

Thus Vardhaman continued his practice for self welfare / perception without worrying about the external world. His aim was only to get full & final freedom from world, to experience the pure self. So he continued to perform deep penance. He was oftenly absorbed in meditation. At last after 12 years of continuous quest for the soul, he attained omniscience, attained ‘Godhood’. He became Bhagwan.

Here one thing is notable, that at the time of accepting monkhood by a Teerthankar, a celebration called ‘Deeksha-Kalyanaka’ is organized by Devies & Devs and their lords – Indras & full Kingdom. In the same way when a Teerthankar attains omniscience there is also a celebration called ‘Gyan-Kalyanaka ’. Now he was praised as ‘Bhagwan Mahaveer’, because he succeeded in conquering the evils of soul – the affection & aversion – the real enemies of soul. Only worldly affection & aversion is the reason of cycle of birth & death.

This is easier to win a state or to a man or to an enemy, but a warrior too, who wins the enemy easily, gets defeated against evils of soul / subjects of senses. He is unable to win the worldly emotions or passions. So when Muni Vardhaman attained omniscience, he was named Mahaveer and called ‘Arihant’ also (Arihant – one who destroys the enemies of thy self)

After attaining omniscience (Sarvagya – power to know all the subjects of world with their characteristics and all time modifications simultaneously), ‘Gyan-Kalyanaka’ was celebrated. Then a huge & magnificent Samavsharan (Circular auditorium with twelve partitions for all categories of audience) was created by Indra – the Lord of Heaven. His chief disciple was ‘Indrabhuti Gautam’ – called ‘Ganadhar’.

Up to 30 years Bhagwan Mahaveer traversed whole of the country and delivered religious sermons. Bhagwan Mahaveer’s first sermon (called ‘Divya-Dhwani’) was delivered on ‘Vipulachala Hill’ near ‘Rajgrahi’.

Preaches of Bhagwan Mahaveer:- In his preaches Mahaveer gave emphasis on non violence, non attachment and on Anekant and Syadvada. He stated that not only the harm to one’s body or killing is Hinsa / Violence, but intension of harm / killing is also violence. He said that emotions / passions of attachment or aversion are also violence, this is the violence against soul because it harms soul, it causes grief & sorrow to soul. Violence of action as well as violence of dialogue or of thought are harmful to soul. This violence is caused due to affection or aversion and these two are developed in soul due to ignorance of the nature of soul. He said that all the matters in world have infinite characteristics in them, so they are able to perform their modifications without help or interference of others. Being knowledgefull, soul desires to acquire or manage others, but due the freedom of matter regarding modifications, soul fails and feels unhappy. This is great offence of soul to interfere the nature which is the only reason of cycle of death & birth.

To get free from this cycle of world, he said that Ratnatraya (Gems-trio) is the only way. Ratnatraya includes Samyak-Darshan (Right Belief), Samyak-Gyan (Right Knowledge) and Samyak-Charitra (Right Conduct). Ratnatraya is confirmed by self perception. It means that only the correct knowledge and belief of matter’s, soul’s nature, its characteristics and then one’s staying in soul (which is called Samyak Charitra - this only is the meditation or penance) is the correct way for self welfare. When one is engrossed in soul, the evils of soul starts diminishing, purity of soul gets increased. While evils are fully vanished, soul is experienced in his fully pure form, one attains omniscience, attains Godhood.

In all this process of purification of soul, eternal peace & pleasure is experienced, that is unavailable in worldly affairs. He also gave the theory of Karma, theory of Anekant & Syadvada which are unique principals of Jainism.

Bhagwan Mahaveer’s days of Panch Kalyanaka (Days according Indian months)
Garbha Kalyanaka (Day of Conception) Asharha Shukla – 6
Janma Kalyanaka (Day of Birth) Chaitra Shukla – 13
Deeksha Kalyanaka (Day of Accepting Monkhood) Margshirsh Krishna – 10
Gyan Kalyanaka (Day of Attaining Omniscience) Vaishakh Shukla – 10
Nirvan Kalyanaka (Day of Attaining Salvation) Kartik Krishna – 15 (Deepavali)

At last Bhagwan Mahaveer arrived at ‘Pavapur’ where he delivered his last sermon. He attained supreme bliss from Pavapur in morning (Before sunrise) of the day ‘Kartik Krishna – 15’ (the day of Deepavali). At that time ‘Moksha-Kalyanaka’ was celebrated by Devies, Devs, Indra & by all the devotees. In the evening of same day chief Ganadhara of Bhagwan Mahaveer – Indrabhuti Gautam attained omniscience by destroying the eternal cycle of life & death, by winning the evils of soul - affection & aversion and attained Godhood. He also became Bhagwan from that time.

So this day of Bhagwan Mahaveer’s Nirvan is celebrated by whole world as ‘Deepavali’ – the festival of Illumination. These tiny lights inspire a devotee for self enlightenment / self realization and to win the dark of worldly worries / to devoid of all worldly attachments.

Today Bhagwan Mahaveer is not among us, but his preaches are still available and are fully useful in current society and life style too. Main points of his preaching are given below –

Preaching of Bhagwan Mahaveer (Extracts of his sermons): -

  • Every soul is independent. None depends on another.
  • All souls are alike. None is superior or inferior.
  • Every soul is in itself absolutely omniscient and blissful. The bliss does not come from outside.
  • Not only soul, but every object of the universe also, is subject to change by itself, without any external interference, possessing infinite characteristics / properties in itself.
  • All human beings are miserable due to their own faults and they can themselves be happy by rectifying them.
  • The greatest mistake of a soul is non-recognition of its real self and it can only be rectified by recognizing itself.
  • There is no separate existence of God. Every body can attain Godhood by making supreme efforts in the right direction.
  • Know thy self, recognize thy self and be immersed in thy self – you will attain Godhood.
  • God is neither the creator nor the destructor of the universe. He is merely a silent observer and omniscient.
  • One who, even after knowing the whole universe can remain unaffected and unattached, is God.

Preaching of Bhagwan Mahaveer regarding conduct of a man in society –

  • The nature of our soul is knowing, not indulging in passions.
  • Never hurt the feelings of others.
  • Telling lies and intention of telling lies are sins.
  • Theft & intention there of, are evils.
  • Lead a life of self-discipline, never indulge is anger and never have pride of any sort.
  • Deceit and perverseness of feelings should not be indulged in.
  • A greedy person is always unhappy.

Its Frustrating !!

It will almost be a week, since the twin blast rocked India but we have not seen any major break through's in the Blast Investigation. I am sure that the Security Agencies are working round the clock to crack this one..but then i ponder why do these security lapses happen?

It has almost become a routine thing, where a Blast Happens, Investigation Happens, people mourn, a few arrest are made, things come back to normal and boom another blast happens. Why is not security given importance? Maybe the Indian Politicians think, providing security do not bring votes so why bother!!

I read about one of the Female Politicians blaming the other party for the blast and then following up saying that it was her personal opinion. Its so frustrating to know that we have people like her sitting in the Parliament! We also saw the whole fracas about the "Money for Vote" Scandal, talk about the sanctity of the Parliament! The Indian Parliament looked close to a Sabzi Mandi, where people were shouting, interrupting other MPs, even the Prime Minister was not allowed to speak. Its high time we have a Code of Conduct for the Parliament, which enables ..err..."Forces" them to behave in a dignified way.

If we want to see Growth, then I see the below things as most essential for the Country:
- Security
- Reduced Corruption
- Good Infrastruture
- Accountability on part of Politicains
- Education, Health benefit and Food for the Poor

Where are we headed?

I was only happy to know that the UPA Goverment survived the Trust Vote and there was a high possibility that the Nuclear Deal would see the light of the day. But my happiness was short lived as two major cities in India were targeted by Islamic Fundamentalist or so called Terrorist by setting off IEDs killing innocent Indian Lives.

This is really concerning, and my heart goes out to the Families of people who died in the Blasts at Bangalore and Ahmedabad. I am also filled with tremendous anger against Pakistan and Bangladesh. I know, i dont have any concrete proof but lets face it on one side we have Pakistan (Rated as a Failed State), one of the most unstable countries in the world and a major hotbed of Islamic Fundamentalist who want to rule the world or to have something they call "Ummah". Their only purpose is to create problems for India. On the other hand we have Bangladesh, whom we helped achieve Independence. But the Goverment of that Country is doing nothing against People who carry out Anti-India Activities. Talk about back stabbing !

I am sorry to say, but the way things are going i have absolutely no hope for these countries as they would be easy Targets for Terrorist. Its difficult to identity these Terrorist in India, but then our IB has been sleeping and they only wake up if something happens. After the blast, i read security beefed up in the Capital. I mean come on, how is that gona help, lives have already been lost and i dont think the Terrorist are so stupid to carry out another Blast when the Security is tight.

We need a "Strong" Anti-Terror Law, but i know the UPA Goverment is so busy with Minority Appeasement, that they forget about Security. I read "Security in India" is a joke, and i totally agree. The Terrorist are striking at will, and we are able to do nothing. The whole thing is scary and i only see problems in Future. This can lead to further isolation of Muslims in the Country, but then again i had heard "All Muslims are not Terrorist but all Terrorist are Muslims". Today the Goverment does not really see the Bigger Picture, they have to act now if we are to sustain the development which are seeing now. I dont want to see "Shariah" implemented .. Lets hope and pray to GOD, that things get better and sense prevails.

Aamchi Mumbai - Future Projects

I happen to have a conversation this morning with one of my Office Colleague who happens to be from India. During the course of conversation, the topic of Mumbai came up and boy was i passionate talking about "Aamchi Mumbai". We spoke a lot about Mumbai, its people, food, how will the Infrastructure shape up in the coming few years..etc.

With the word "Infrastructure" a lot of things came into my mind...Metro Rail..Monorail..and so on. I am anxiously waiting for all these things to be developed, though i know it will take a while but i only see a beautiful city. I cant wait to be there at the place i "still" call Home.

I just googled to see the developments that are going to happen and i was in for a surprise !

Wadala Truck Terminal -The Objective is to decongest South Mumbai by shifting the existing transport companies offices and godowns, which are today concentrated in B & C Wards

Shifting of Wholesale Markets - Shifting of all Major Markets to Navi Mumbai and also the Textile Market to BKC

Mahim Nature Park - This used to be one of the Major Garbage Dump only to be converted to a Nature Park. ( I never knew this existed, there are many good things about this Park, sure to visit this place the next time i m there)

Mumbai Metri Rail Project - One of the most ambitious ones (My Favourite...this one could be similar to the Tube of London or the Subway of NYC, or maybe the NJPATH )

Skywalks - The Bandra one is already done, waiting for the Rest.

Monorail - Another smart one, maybe completed by 2012.

Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS)

Again, the sheer increase in the development of Highrise Building will make Mumbai resemble any other major Financial City in the world..NYC ..why not..after all we have dared to dream and
god willing...it will turn into a reality.

Nuclear Deal !!

Nuclear Deal today is one of the most talked about stories among the Indian Media, Politicians and the Urban Population of India.

Some call it the "Best thing that can happen to the Energy starved India", some would call it the "Deal which can bring down the Government". Yet i do not know the details of the deal except the fact that not only would it bring the 2 Biggest Democratic Countries in the World together, but it would also help India in generating Energy which is the need of hour and will also aid in sustaining the GDP Growth that the Country has witnessed.

The Relations between India and US have never been better, and i do not see any reason why we should not come closer. A lot of people have termed as anti-muslim,anti-sikh, anti -???. I seriously wonder what goes inside the brains of these people. What has Energy got to do with Religion? They should see the Bigger Picture, we are using this deal to meet our energy demands and if that requires a little bit of tango with US, so be it.

I know some people say, it limits our right to Test Nuclear Weapons(Quote: Hyde Act), but i guess we already do possess weapons of mass destruction and i dont think in the near immediate future we would be required to test. But having said that, debating on such a thing makes sense, but our Politicians again are just using this as another way to Topple the Goverment, and putting party before Country.

Mayawati is at its best trying to poach and pursue the MPs to vote against the Congress in the Parliament tomorrow so she can harbour her dream of becoming "PM". Mayawati as "PM", i can never imagine this even in my craziest of dreams. One, she is accused as one of the most corrupt (Based on her manifold increase in Assets), her state UP is again one of the least progressive states in India. If she is able to turn around UP, prove that she can make things work, then yes i would not mind. But till then i would prefer an Intellectual like Dr. Manmohan Singh to be the PM.

I hope the Goverment is able to survive the Trust Vote tomorrow and Nuclear deal sees the light of the day. One of the only few good decisions taken by the Congress.

Ancient Wisdom !!

SCIENCE BOOKS OF ANCIENT INDIA

A study of the ancient books of India dealing with science makes interesting reading. Let us try to see at least a few of them.

1. VIMAANA SHASTRA.
Rsi Bhaaradwaaja is the author. Mr. Joshier has translated this to English. Based on this Taarpade couple of Bombay in 1895 prepared an aeroplane by name “MARUTSUKHA”. This plane was using sun light and mercury vapour for its fuel. This flew for a distance of 2000 feet. The Right Brothers had not yet invented the aeroplane then. Since the British were ruling India, this invention did not get publicized.

2. AMSHUBODHINI
This book authored by Sage Bhaaradvaaja mentioned the use of solar energy for various purposes. It was also mentioned that wireless messages could be sent.

3. GOLAADHYAAYA
Bhaaskaraachaarya was the author. It deals with geometry and mentions the methods to decide on the movement of the various planets, their speed etc.,

4. Yanthra sarvasva
This was also authored by Bhaaradvaaja. Electricity production and management is the subject here.

5. NAARAYANA SOOKTHA.
This deals with human body science. The specialty is the specific details of the heart mentioned in this book, which is valid even now.

6. MAALINEE SHAASTRA
This book authored by Rishyashringa deals with living and non-living things and the basic difference etc.

7. VISHA VAADA
This deals with chemistry. Various experiments to produce several materials are described here.

8. SOOPA SHASTRA
Maharshi Sukesha’s book dealing with cookery.

9. GAARUDAM
Deals with anti poison drugs.

10. AATHREYA
Deals with surgery authored by Rsi. Aathreya.

11. AKSHARA LAKSHANA GANITHA SHAASTRA
Deals with mathematics and contains 84 theorems and theories.

12. SOUDAAMINEE KULA
Authored by Rsi. Mathanga and deals with geography and astronomy.

13 ANUKARANA SHABDASHAASTRA
Deals with sound. An authoritative book.

14. CHITHRA KARMA
Deals with photography.

15. BRAHMAANDA SHAASTRA
Deals with different worlds and the instruments useful to see them.

16. AAKAASHA THANTRA
Deals with space research.

17. LOHA TANTRA
Deals with different metals.

18. SHAKTHI TANTRA
Different sources of energy are the subject matter.

19. KAALA SHAASTRA
Measurement of time is the subject here.

20. AARYABHATTEEYA
Deals with astronomy and mathematics. It is here that for the first time it was told that the earth is round and goes round the sun. It took several centuries for the westerners to find this out. It has also been mentioned here as to how eclipses take place.

Other than these, there are several other works like- BRIHAT SAMHITHE, VIGNAANA BHYRAVAM, ANDA KOUSTUBHAM, AAPTATVA PRAKAARANAM, MEGHOTPATTI PRAKARANAM, SHILPASHAASTRA, PARAASHARA SMRITHI, SHIVA SWARODAYAM, BHAAVA PRKAASHIKA, GARBHOPANISHAT ETC.,

What is needed is the will to conduct research on these and find out what and how much more is available to us in our old scriptures. Modern scientists of Indian origin should take the required initiative in the direction.

Sam "Bahadur" Maneckshaw

A soldier's General, Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw crafted India's greatest military victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war that created just not history, but also a new nation.

Affectionately called "Sam Bahadur", Manekshaw, 94, was the architect of many a military triumph, but his finest hour came when Pakistani forces were vanquished in 14 days flat. And Bangladesh was born.

Handsome, witty and sporting his trademark handlebar moustache, Manekshaw had the rare distinction of being honoured for his bravery - Military Cross - right on the battle front itself during the Second World War. He was also the first Indian officer to command the Gorkhas after India got Independence.

Manekshaw, who got a second life after the young Captain survived near fatal wounds during the Second World War in Burma, is the first of only two Indian military officers to hold the highest rank of Field Marshal of the Indian Army (The other being Field Marshal K M Cariappa).

His distinguished military career spanned four decades from the British era and through five wars, including the Second World War.

Flamboyant by nature, Manekshaw always had his way with people, including his seniors and even the country's Head of Government.

Just before the Bangladesh operations in December 1971, the then prime minister Indira Gandhi [Images] asked Manekshaw ,who was the Army Chief then, "General are you ready" (for the war). Pat came the reply from the dapper officer, "I am always ready sweetie." Indira was not unpleased, nor offended.

On another occasion, Indira asked him whether he was planning to take over the country. Pointing to his long nose, the General replied: "I don't use it to poke into other's affairs."

When Indira asked him to go to Dhaka and accept the surrender of Pakistani forces, Manekshaw declined, magnanimously saying that honour should go to his Army commander in the East (Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Aurora).

Manekshaw said he would only go if it were to accept the surrender of the entire Pakistani army.

A shrewd tactician, Manekshaw meticulously planned the Indian attack on Pakistan on both fronts -- East and West. While the Indian forces captured the then East Pakistan in the eastern sector, the army made heavy inroads in the western sector going up to Lahore [Images].

Adopting a mature war strategy, he masterminded the rout of the Pakistan Army in one of the quickest victories in the recent military history to liberate Bangladesh.

Born on April 3, 1914 in Amritsar [Images] to Parsi parents who migrated to Punjab from the small town of Valsad on the Gujarat coast, Manekshaw rose to be the Eighth Chief of Staff of the Indian Army in 1969. The year of the General's birth was around the time when the First World War broke.

During World War II, Manekshaw saw action in the Burma campaign on Sittang River as a Captain with the 4/12 Frontier Force Regiment.

Manekshaw was leading a counter-offensive against the invading Japanese Army in Burma. During the course of the offensive he was hit by a burst of LMG bullets and was severely wounded in the stomach.

Major General D T Cowan spotted Manekshaw holding on to life and was aware of his valour in face of stiff resistance from the Japanese.

Fearing the worst, Major General Cowan quickly pinned his own Military Cross ribbon on to Manekshaw saying, "A dead person cannot be awarded a Military Cross." But luck was on the young Captain's side and he survived to be one of India's most popular Army Chiefs.

Manekshaw became the 8th Chief of Army Staff when he succeeded General Kumaramangalam on June 7, 1969. His years of military experience were soon put to the test as thousands of refugees from the erstwhile East Pakistan started crossing over to India as a result of oppression from West Pakistan. The volatile situation erupted into a full-scale war in December 1971 and the rest is history.

During the 1971 war, Manekshaw showed uncanny ability to motivate the forces, coupling it with a mature war strategy.

The war ended with Pakistan's unconditional surrender, and the formation of Bangladesh. More than 45,000 Pakistani soldiers and 45,000 civilian personnel were taken as POWs.

This led to the Shimla Agreement which opened the door to the creation of the nation of Bangladesh as separate from Pakistan.

The Field Marshal's wit was legendary. Once on a visit to his unit as Commanding Officer he asked what action was taken against a man who contracted veneral disease and when he was told the man's head was shaved off, he roared. "Shaved off?

Dammit. he didn't do it with his head."

After completing his schooling in Amritsar and Sherwood College (Nainital), he joined the first batch of 40 cadets at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun on October 1, 1932. He passed out of the IMA in December 1934 and was commissioned as

a Second Lieutenant in the Indian Army. He held several regimental assignments and was first attached to the Royal Scots and later to the 4/12 Frontier Force Regiment.

Having recovered from those near-fatal wounds in Burma, Manekshaw went for a course at Staff College, Quetta and later also served there as an instructor before being sent to join 12 Frontier Force Rifles in Burma under General (later Field Marshal) Slim's 14th Army.

He was once again involved in a fierce battle with the Japanese, and was wounded for a second time.

In 1937, at a social gathering in Lahore Manekshaw met Silloo Bode. They fell in love and were married on April 22, 1939. Silloo, a graduate of Bombay's Elphinstone College made an admirable wife.

Towards the close of World War II, Manekshaw was sent as Staff Officer to General Daisy in Indo-China where, after the Japanese surrender, he helped rehabilitate over 10,000 POWs.

He then went on a six-month lecture tour to Australia in 1946, and after his return served as a First Grade Staff Officer in the Military Operations Directorate.

Manekshaw showed acumen for planning and administration while handling the issues related to Partition in 1947, and later put to use his battle skills during the 1947-48 Jammu and Kashmir [Images] Operations.

After command of an Infantry Brigade, he was posted as the Commandant of the Infantry School and also became the Colonel of 8 Gorkha Rifles (which became his new regimental home, since his original parent regiment The 12th Frontier

Force Regiment went on to join the new Pakistan Army at partition) and 61 Cavalry.

He commanded a Division in Jammu and Kashmir and a Corps in the North East, with a tenure as Commandant of Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in between. As GOC-in-C, Eastern Command, he handled the tricky problem of insurgency in

Nagaland and the grateful nation honoured him with a Padma Bhushan in 1968.

For his distinguished service to the country, the President of India awarded him a Padma Vibhushan in 1972.

The President conferred upon him the rank of Field Marshal, a prestigious honorary rank, on January one, 1973.

Manekshaw retired a fortnight later (although technically Field Marshals of the Indian Army never retire because the rank is conferred for life), on January 15, 1973, after completing nearly four decades of military service.

In 1961, his outspoken frankness got him into trouble with Defence Minister V K Krishna Menon and his protege of the time Lt Gen B M Kaul. He refused to toe Menon's line and was sidelined.

Manekshaw was vindicated soon after when the Indian Army suffered a humiliating defeat in North East Frontier Agency (NEFA), now Arunachal Pradesh, the next year, at the hands of the Chinese that led to Menon's resignation.

Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru rushed Manekshaw to NEFA to command the

retreating Indian forces. This had an electrifying effect on the demoralised officers.

In no time, Manekshaw convinced the troops that the Chinese soldier was not "10 feet tall". His first order of the day said, "There will be no withdrawal without written orders and these orders shall never be issued." The soldiers showed faith in their new commander and successfully checked further ingress by the Chinese.

After retirement, Manekshaw settled down in Coonoor in the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu.

"Migrant Thackerays came to Mumbai for jobs"

Today as per the morning routine, i happen to visit a News Web-site, and came across one of the articles whose headline read "Migrant Thackerays came to Mumbai for jobs".

It took me back to all the news coming from Mumbai about the "MNS - Maharashtra sena or something" started by Raj Thackeray agitating against Migrant People working in Mumbai. I must confess, i liked the Shiv Sena, adored Mr. Bal and Raj Thackeray, for reasons which i want to keep as personal.

However, post the breakaway of Raj and this whole hoopla about Migrant Workers, i started disliking Raj T. Dont we have enough problems to take care off? Why start with this regionalism shit. For what, votes..... m sure by starting all this he is only going to loose. What has he contributed to the betterment of Mumbai? Nothing major that i can recollect.

Why not he starts a campaign against Corruption, educating and providing livelihood to the underpriviledged...but nah you know how it goes in India...its the party First, then the money, then if time State/Country :)

Anyways but this Headline, proved like a Slap against this Politician, and i was only happy to read it....that his ancestors itself came to Mumbai for a Better Living...Hope sense prevails in the minds of these Politicians !!

My First New Car !!

This is one of the most wonderful feelings i have experienced, just like any one else who has bought his/her First Car.

I too bought one, a Honda Accord Ex-L though i call it the Black Stallion coz its Black with Ivory Interior. It was one of the most fondest of moments i have experienced in my Life. Though it took quite a bit of thinking of having to spend so much of money, but in the end it was absolutely worth it.

I can never forget Thursday 17, 2008 :) it was this day when i took the delivery of my car.

Lord Mahavira

Mahavir was born in 599 B.C. as a prince in Bihar, India. At the age of 30, he left his family and royal household, gave up his worldly possessions, including clothing and became a monk.

He spent the next twelve years in deep silence and meditation to conquer his desires and feelings. He went without food for long periods. He carefully avoided harming or annoying other living beings including animals, birds, and plants.

His ways of meditation, days of austerities, and mode of behavior furnish a beautiful example for monks and nuns in religious life. His spiritual pursuit lasted for twelve years.

At the end he realized perfect perception, knowledge, power, and bliss. This realization is known as keval-jnana.

He spent the next thirty years travelling on bare feet around India preaching to the people the eternal truth he realized. He attracted people from all walks of life, rich and poor, kings and commoners, men and women, princes and priests, touchables and untouchables.

He organized his followers, into a four fold order, namely

  • monk (Sadhu)
  • nun (Sadhvi)
  • layman (Shravak)
  • and laywoman (Shravika)
Later on they are known as Jains.

The ultimate objective of his teaching is how one can attain the total freedom from the cycle of birth, life, pain, misery, and death, and achieve the permanent blissful state of one's self. This is also known as liberation, nirvana, absolute freedom, or Moksha.

He explained that from eternity, every living being (soul) is in bondage of karmic atoms, that are accumulated by its own good or bad deeds. Under the influence of karma, the soul is habituated to seek pleasures in materialistic belongings and possessions. Which are the deep rooted causes of self-centered violent thoughts, deeds, anger, hatred, greed, and such other vices. These result in accumulating more karma.

He preached that right faith (samyak-darshana), right knowledge (samyak-jnana), and right conduct (samyak-charitra) together will help attain the liberation of one's self.

At the heart of right conduct for Jains lie the five great vows:

  • Nonviolence (Ahimsa) not to cause harm to any living beings
  • Truthfulness (Satya) to speak the harmless truth only
  • Non-stealing (Asteya)not to take anything not properly given
  • Chastity (Brahmacharya) not to indulge in sensual pleasure
  • Non-possession/Non-attachment (Aparigraha) complete detachment from people, places, and material things.

Jains hold these vows at the center of their lives. The monks and nuns follow these vows strictly and totally, while the common people try to follow the vows as far as their life styles will permit.

At the age of 72 (527 B.C.), Lord Mahavir died and his purified soul left the body and achieved complete liberation. He became a Siddha, a pure consciousness, a liberated soul, living for ever in a state of complete bliss. On the night of his salvation, people celebrated the Festival of Lights (Dipavali) in his honor.

This is so TRUE !!

The below Article is extracted from one of the Web-Sites, written by some Female Journo. I found it interesting so here it is below for a good read !!

---------------------

The relationship between men and women has always been a love-hate type. Are we from Venus and they, from Mars? Are we as complicated as they make us seem and they, as simple as they claim to be?

Oh yes, we need them and they need us – but then, there are moments when the love and dependency takes a 360 degree turn. I was talking to my gang of girls and little did I realize that our giggling gang had touched upon the latest fashion, the hottest designer, the coolest shades, the new beauty therapy, the latest gizmo, the new patisserie around the corner – and finally, we hung our boots by talking about our respective men – from a rant session to a rag session over how ‘impossible’ they were! From being the man of the house to the baby of the house, a quick run on the things that we hate about men.

• Ask you out, start a relationship with you, then ponder to their guy friends, "I'm not sure if she is my type!”

• Think that there is something wrong about gay men, but lesbians they totally support

• Male chauvinism! We fail to understand why men can stop and ask for direction till its 50 odd kms into the wrong direction?! It’s always been a mystery why they will not stop and ask for directions!

• Tells everyone that you are smothering them and that they are annoyed that you are always around. But the very second you get off work or are out with your friends for a change, your cell phone starts ringing off the hook and he's saying , "When are coming over. I miss you. I love you. Come back!”

• Temporary amnesia! They remember the names of football and cricketers from some odd country, their scores, their entire career track – but ask them about birthday’s or anniversaries and the scores each player has made, but cannot for the life them remember birthdays, anniversaries and buying gifts. What kind selective memory is that?

• Oh, they nod their head with aplomb when the topic veers towards gender equality! They are all for it! But, when it comes to pitching in with household chores – suddenly, gender equality is an alien lingo!

• They categorize women into two types – a cool type and a marriageable type. They love to hang around with the hip and happening babes, but when it comes to tying the knot, it’s a virgin bride all the way through! As the saying rightly goes, “You can go to a restaurant and look at the menu card, but its home- cooked meal that completes you”. And our men, seem to follow that saying to the T.

• An absolute control over the remote control! There has to be some kind of deep seated relation to this, but it’s yet to be unearthed.

• Strutting around like a peacock! Ugggh…that’s a no – no! Agreed that they are handy when it comes to fixing a loose wire or tightening the nuts and bolts, but constantly stroking their feathers on that count weighs us down.

• Not that there is anything wrong with looking – (we also like to look!), but someone ought to teach the boys the fine art of looking! There is a very fine line between ogling and looking. And somehow, our boys think its all one and the same!

The Billionaire, The Philanthropist, The "Guru"

He is a Billionaire, a philanthropist, the Guru, he is Warren Buffet !!

He is the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway an 118 Billion Business Conglomerate. Aint that big for a person who bought his First Share @11 Years Old ??

The Journey of Warren Buffet has truly been inspirational and he is the one who has beaten another Gem in this World. Mr Bill Gates as the richest man on Planet Earth

Lets look at some of the facts of this Genius
- He bought his first share when he was @11
- He bought a farm @14 Years
- He drives his own Car, does not have a Cell Phone and his desk is without a Computer !! Phew ..how does he manage all this
- He lives in the same Omaha Home he bought 35 Years ago..
- He never travels by private jet, although he owns the world's largest private jet company.

He has a very simple view towards Life and does not quite believe in Flashy degrees and titles..all he says is "You need good brains"

Whenever he speaks it leaves a lasting impression i.e.

"I want to give my kids just enough so that they would feel that they could do anything, but not so much that they would feel like doing nothing"

If a business does well, the stock eventually follows.

It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently.

It's far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price.

Last but not the least his advice to young people

"Stay away from credit cards and invest in yourself."

Hats off to this Man !!

How to Survive a Stock Market !!

1. Stop Listening To Analysts

Analyst are the First People to confuse you. Some would say buy where as some would say Sell. Try not to Trust these people, and take only an informed decision.

2. Stop Staring At Your Portfolio Every Thirty Minutes

How does it help staring your Portfolio every now and then, it would only add more to the agony in a crashing market. Always Invest in quality stocks and based upon the Financials keep holding these stocks.

3. Be Patient

Thumb Rule, Be Patient

4. Speak To Actual Investors With Experience

Speak to people who are Investors with Experience, they are the people who have seen it all

5. Stop Following Crazy Tips

Please, please never follow crazy tips, especially penny stocks !!

6. Understand Market Cycles

Something which requires a little knowledge and experience, but tremendously helps

7. Follow The Guru

Today the richest man on earth, Warren Buffett, is an investor who has created wealth because he has stayed away from what everybody else is doing and has simply invested in quality companies for the long term. He invested in Gillette, for the simple reason that he believed that men won’t stop shaving. It makes sense to follow, as I call him, “The Guru” and think long term and remember people who create wealth do things that others don’t.

Happy Investing !!

Video Resume !!

We all know what is a "Resume". But have you ever heard about a Video Resume? As we know Internet has been responsible in changing a lot of things..ways of Life, the way we do things. Similarly Video Resume is one of such things.

To simply describe it, it is "A video resume is a brief account of a job applicant's professional experience, qualifications and interests, submitted to a prospective employer in video form"

Sound simple, isn't it. Though Video Resumes have been existing since quite some time in the form of VHS Tapes, but with the advent of "You Tube" ,broadband and cheap web cams, this is now very widespread.

There are various Pros and Cons to this, lets look at some of the Pros:
- Saves a lot of Recruitment and Travel Costs for both the Companies and the Candidate
- Good Video Resume can elevate the Candidate over others
- Its a Unique way of Presenting yourself as a Prospective Employee to the Company.
- One can show their Verbal and Creative Skills without making themselves available for Interview.

I could not think about any Cons, except that a ridiculous / funny video resume can land up on You Tube and become the laughing stock of people worldwide. It has happened before with a Yale University student.

Some Tips to create a Video Resume
- First Analyze whether a Video Resume is appropriate for the Industry
- The most successful video resume should feature short, to-the-point answers, superior editing skills and often a dash of humor.

WEB 2.0

The bursting of the dot-com bubble in the fall of 2001 marked a turning point for the web. Many people concluded that the web was overhyped, when in fact bubbles and consequent shakeouts appear to be a common feature of all technological revolutions. Shakeouts typically mark the point at which an ascendant technology is ready to take its place at center stage. The pretenders are given the bum's rush, the real success stories show their strength, and there begins to be an understanding of what separates one from the other.

The concept of "Web 2.0" began with a conference brainstorming session between O'Reilly and MediaLive International. Dale Dougherty, web pioneer and O'Reilly VP, noted that far from having "crashed", the web was more important than ever, with exciting new applications and sites popping up with surprising regularity. What's more, the companies that had survived the collapse seemed to have some things in common. Could it be that the dot-com collapse marked some kind of turning point for the web, such that a call to action such as "Web 2.0" might make sense? We agreed that it did, and so the Web 2.0 Conference was born.

In the year and a half since, the term "Web 2.0" has clearly taken hold, with more than 9.5 million citations in Google. But there's still a huge amount of disagreement about just what Web 2.0 means, with some people decrying it as a meaningless marketing buzzword, and others accepting it as the new conventional wisdom.

This article is an attempt to clarify just what we mean by Web 2.0.

In our initial brainstorming, we formulated our sense of Web 2.0 by example:

Web 1.0
Web 2.0
DoubleClick --> Google AdSense
Ofoto --> Flickr
Akamai --> BitTorrent
mp3.com --> Napster
Britannica Online --> Wikipedia
personal websites --> blogging
evite --> upcoming.org and EVDB
domain name speculation --> search engine optimization
page views --> cost per click
screen scraping --> web services
publishing --> participation
content management systems --> wikis
directories (taxonomy) --> tagging ("folksonomy")
stickiness --> syndication

The list went on and on. But what was it that made us identify one application or approach as "Web 1.0" and another as "Web 2.0"? (The question is particularly urgent because the Web 2.0 meme has become so widespread that companies are now pasting it on as a marketing buzzword, with no real understanding of just what it means. The question is particularly difficult because many of those buzzword-addicted startups are definitely not Web 2.0, while some of the applications we identified as Web 2.0, like Napster and BitTorrent, are not even properly web applications!) We began trying to tease out the principles that are demonstrated in one way or another by the success stories of web 1.0 and by the most interesting of the new applications.
